The Music Program
The Music Program at Burpengary State School offers exciting and stimulating instruction for all students within the school regardless of the capabilities of individual children.
All students from Preparatory to Year 6 are given a 30 minute ‘music lesson’ per week where they are encouraged to participate in all forms of music education. These take the form of singing, playing musical instruments and exploring the basic fundamentals of all forms and varieties of music. Our talented music teachers are always eager to share their enthusiasm and love of music with all the students in their classes.
As well as participating in these music classes, the program also enables the more artistic students the opportunity to participate in the following programmes:
The Multi Instrumental Program
This program offers instruction to students in Years 4-6 on a variety of orchestral instruments. Our instrumental music teachers coordinate the programs and instruct each student on their selected instruments.
All students involved in the Multi Instrumental Program become a member of a particular ensemble group. Beginning students become members of the ‘Junior Concert Band’ (once they have been taught the basics of their instrument) where they learn the fundamentals of stage craft and performance. Advanced instrumental music students perform in the ‘Senior Concert Band’ which allows the ensemble to attempt challenging music while still giving the students the necessary skills to perform at a more advanced level.
The Strings Program
This program offers instruction to students in Years 3-6. Our strings teacher offers instruction on Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass on a weekly basis. Beginning string students, after learning the fundamentals of their particular instruments, form a ‘Beginning Strings Ensemble’ where they are taught to perform short, simple music within an ensemble. The ‘Senior String Ensemble’ offers the students a more challenging program commensurate with their abilities.
The Choral Program
This program offers students in Years 4-6 an opportunity to develop and extend the children’s singing abilities. Our music teachers co-ordinate and conduct the program. The Junior Choral Ensemble is for students in Year 4 only in which we develop the student’s unison and simple two part performance as well as concentrating on the child’s stagecraft performance. For students in Years 5-6, the Senior Choral Ensemble takes the students’ singing abilities to a higher level concentrating on more complex styles of music and performing.
Performances
All musical ensembles operating within Burpengary State School perform within the local community as well as throughout Brisbane. Performances include:
Anzac Day, school fetes and events, annual musical evenings, and various selected competitions throughout the school year.
Depending on the availability of places for these ensembles, students are encouraged to join and participate in these valuable musical experiences.
