Learning Engagement Framework
Burpengary State School provides a Learning Engagement Program that uses student achievement data to focus on all students. From this, we can target groups who, for example, do not meet national, state and school-based literacy and numeracy achievement standards and expectations as well as those who are working above standard achievement levels and who require extension beyond their current performance level or those who need to fill a small gap in their learning.
The Learning Engagement Team which is co-ordinated by our school-based Learning Engagement Teachers: Literacy & Numeracy provides a Learning Engagement Program involving support for teachers in classroom based differentiation practices and both targeted and intensive student intervention.
The Program is centred on evidence-based instruction, continuous monitoring, timely identification of students requiring support and extension, and the use of data to alter the intensity or type of intervention. The Data Team works with the Learning Engagement Team to provide current data to inform support and targeted teaching plans.
The Learning Engagement team
Classroom Teachers can refer students to the Learning Engagement Team if they have concerns that a student is:
At ‘educational risk’ and is not achieving to the agreed achievement standards
Exceeding the expected achievement standards in some or all areas of the curriculum
Or there is a level of concern regarding access to learning, concerns about social and emotional wellbeing, attendance, behaviour or family circumstances.
The Learning Engagement Team meets on a regular basis. Referral forms are located within the staffroom for teachers to access. A teacher must inform parent/caregivers of referral concerns and gain their permission before a child will be discussed by the Learning Engagement Team.
A collective decision is made by the Learning Engagement Team with the Classroom Teacher as to the most appropriate course of action for that particular student. A plan is developed and responsibility for implementation of this plan is with the Classroom Teacher with the support of specified members of the Learning Engagement Team. The Learning Engagement Team may make referrals to:
Advisory Visiting Teachers
Advisory Visiting Teachers e.g. SLP (Speech Language Pathologist); ECD Advisor (Early Childhood Development Advisor); ESL Teacher (English as a Second Language); Indigenous Support Teacher; Behaviour Team etc.
(Advisory Visiting Teachers are teachers with specialist knowledge and skills, who support students with specific educational, social and emotional needs.)
The School Chaplain
Chaplaincy Services provide positive adult role models for students. Chaplains are present in schools at the invitation of the Principal, in consultation with the local community, and with the support of the P&C Association.
A School Chaplain is a safe person for young people to connect with at school and provides a listening ear, caring presence and a message of hope. Chaplains run positive, fun activities for students and assist in fostering supportive, caring school communities. Working with other members of the school's support team, the Chaplain cares for students struggling with issues such as difficult relationships with other children or family members, poor self-esteem, family breakdown and depression.
The partnership between the school and the Chaplaincy Service, supported by local churches, businesses and community organisations, provides a network of local support and assistance. These positive relationships help young people to face difficult issues, and provide hope, connection meaning and purpose. The Chaplaincy Service can provide spiritual, ethical and personal support to everyone in the school community regardless of their religious beliefs.
Our Chaplain, Marie Wright, visits Burpengary State School on Wednesdays and Thursdays. During this time, she assists with sporting and cultural programs, assists in classrooms, runs programmes that help students develop social and life skills and organises lunchtime activities. Involvement with the Chaplain is entirely voluntary and students choose whether or not they want to be a part of the activities that are offered. Parents will be consulted if their child wishes to be involved in ongoing one-to-one meetings with the Chaplain or in any programme or group involving spiritual or ethical content. Parents have the right to refuse permission for their child to be involved in any Chaplaincy event or activity.
